SIMBAA has been signed into law!
The Stop Immigration Bond Abuse Act (SIMBAA) #A7770 / #S7475 will protect thousands of immigrants from predatory for-profit immigration bond companies.
Right now, more than 2,700 people are languishing in immigration detention in the New York area. These include neighbors and coworkers, fellow New Yorkers, who committed no crimes.
Even more perversely, while enduring notoriously long detention proceedings, immigrants can be forced to choose between being separated from their families… or subjecting themselves to predatory and exploitative businesses whose practices take advantage of the shadowy immigration bond process.
Reasonable reform can stop companies from violating New Yorkers’ privacy, safety, and essential dignity. You can make it happen.
Help New York pass the STOP IMMIGRATION BOND ABUSE ACT (SIMBAA).
Whether you are a multi-generational New Yorker, recent arrival, or simply someone who cares about their neighbor and neighborhood, join this effort to end profiteering from immigrant families’ pain.
